Access Note: Our rustic campsite is reached via a traditional farm track that is uneven, rocky, and potentially muddy, with occasional shallow water crossings. Low or purposely lowered vehicles may struggle. While we are gradually making improvements, the track reflects our natural, rural setting.

Camping The Way It Should Be

Sixty pitches. Three distinct areas. No allocations — just find your spot, put your pegs in, and settle in for the best kind of slow.

Stonethwaite Farm & Campsite sits in one of the quietest corners of Borrowdale — surrounded by the fells, a meandering river, and enough sky to feel genuinely far from everything. It’s a real working farm, so you’ll have Herdwick sheep for neighbours and proper fell views from your tent door.

🕒 Check-in / Check-out: Check-in from 3pm. Departure by 11am.
🏕 Bookings only: No walk-ins. All stays must be booked in advance.
🐕 Dogs: Welcome on leads. There’s a designated dog run on site.
No electric hookups: All pitches are grass without electric.

Campsite

Pitch Areas

All pitches are grass, without electric hookup. Pitch where you like within your chosen area — there are no fixed allocations.
Each pitch includes: 1 tent or campervan (up to 6 metres) & 1 vehicle on pitch.

Additional tents, vehicles, gazebos or guests must be declared at the time of booking and may incur an extra charge. Bookings that exceed the pitch limits may be refused on arrival.

Events

Main Field

Pitches located at the top of the campsite to the right of the track. Open, spacious grass pitches with fell views.

Woodland Area

The first area you reach as you enter through the gate. Pitches sit between the trees and continue around the toilet block towards the exit. Peaceful and sheltered.

Please note: no fires are permitted in the woodland area.

Riverside

A narrow field located to the left towards the top of the campsite. You can camp further towards the river, though vehicles must be left by the exit gate if you want to pitch right on the riverside. Worth it.

Under New Management

We have made some difficult but necessary changes to this campsite. When we took it over, the lack of rules had unfortunately led to serious safety and environmental issues, and the site was shut down as a result.

Our priority has always been to operate the campsite responsibly—protecting the land, our guests, and the future of the site itself. To meet our safety, licensing, and environmental requirements, guests are not permitted to bring their own fire pits. However, we are excited to now offer 20 campfire bundles available to rent! Each bundle includes a firepit, heat mat, gauze top, logs, kindling, and firelighters. Please note that only our rented bundles are allowed on-site, and they are strictly prohibited in the woodland area.

We understand these changes won’t suit everyone, and that’s okay. Our goal isn’t to be the right place for all campers – it’s to be a safe, respectful, and sustainable place for the right ones. We can’t wait to welcome you to the new Stonethwaite Farm and Campsite.
