The Farm

Stonethwaite Farm is still a working farm; it was once owned by the monks of Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire from 1195 as part of the lands they owned. In 1304 King Edward intervened and confiscated the farm and sold it for 40 shillings to Fountains Abbey. This was after the monks of Furness complained the land had been unfairly split.

In 2024 Stonethwaite Farm was merged with some land at Thorneythwaite and together they are now home to over 500 Borrowdale Herdwick Sheep.  Our flock is heafed to Langstrath and Coombe Fell. Many people know them as the Guardian of the Fells as they have been part of the Lake District landscape for over 1000 years, if you want to find out more visit – Herdwick Sheep Breeders Association Established 1916

A True Countryside Experience

This is our first season as the new tenants of Stonethwaite Farm and Campsite, our vision is for us to enrich our campers lives with our tranquil and peaceful campsite. We want families to come and experience all that Borrowdale has to offer in a safe environment. Our working farm naturally ravels into the campsite, campers can see what it is like to farm in the Lake District and how the preservation of the land through farming is so important.

Meet the Owners

Hi, we are John and Emma Stalker, and our three boys are Noah, Cody and Jake. In 2024 we took over Stonethwaite Farm and Campsite and Thorneythwaite and we are so excited to share our journey with you all.

John was born onto a farm in Coniston and has farmed all his life alongside his farrier business. I moved to Cumbria in 2012 from the Northeast of England and have been learning about farming since meeting John. Noah and Cody are in love with farming and are future young farmers.

about us

Cleft Lip and Palate

Noah and Jake were born with a Cleft Lip and Palate, we know so many families in the UK struggle with this condition before and after birth, and face many more struggles during their little ones life. Children with Clefts are often ‘left behind’ due to speech and hearing problems and confidence, you might be wondering why I am mentioning this on a camping site, well our story is no less important than others but we want to embed our support to families with Clefts or any disability into our vision.

Farming has allowed Noah to find a sense of calm, he suffers with a bad stammer and poor hearing and so far, has had 4 operations, he is only 4 years old. Being outside with the animals and running around the fields has had the most positive effect on him. He gets to be big and strong with Daddy on the quadbike, shouting at the dogs to gather the sheep and helping to feed our neighbouring cows.

This is why as part of our vision and commitment we are promoting being family friendly. We want families to come and experience what we do, to stay on a tranquil calming campsite and to enjoy being together away from the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life and to let their little ones, irrespective of disability/age/ability to thrive.
